A woman experiences the benefits of an abhyanga massage

What Is an Abhyanga Full-body Massage?

Calendar 15/08/2025 12:36:23

The ancient Ayurvedic practice of an abhyanga full-body oil massage treats the largest organ in the body - the skin. The warm oil used in the massage technique helps keep the skin properly moisturized and supple. However, the purported benefits of an abhyanga massage can also include:

• Healthier vision

• Improved sleep

• Better blood and lymph fluid circulation

• Possible stress relief

• It may benefit hair health

• It may lower blood pressure

• Reduces the appearance of wrinkles, scars and cellulite

• Less muscle stiffness

The main benefits of abhyanga massage over other types of massage are that it can be practiced as a type of daily self-massage ritual, or the massage can be administered by a trained professional skilled in the ancient techniques of Ayurvedic medicine. The self-massage techniques grew in popularity during the recent pandemic. Many people were isolated and had time to explore these ancient massage techniques. They immediately noticed the benefits that an abhyanga massage provided to their body when practiced daily.

Health Land Spa & Massage offers a comprehensive abhyanga full-body massage package at any of our spas in Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai. Before you attempt an abhyanga massage at home, you should learn the proper massage techniques used by our skilled massage technicians at Health Land Spa & Massage.

4 Components of an Abhyanga Massage

An abhyanga massage is divided into four components at Health Land Spa & Massage. The components include:

1. Floral Foot Ritual: During the floral foot ritual, your feet are soaked in warm water infused with herbs, flower petals, and minerals.

2. Abhyanga Full-body Oil Massage: the massage uses soft to medium pressure and warm essential oils on every part of your body to release fat-soluble toxins from your skin.

3. Shower: The oil should soak into your skin for at least 5-10 minutes after the massage to fully moisturize it.

4. Refreshments: Serving refreshments after an abhyanga massage encourages people to relax and allow the massage to deliver its full benefits.

7 Steps of an Abhyanga Full-body Massage

The seven steps of an abhyanga full-body massage are designed to treat the entire body from the head to the toes. The steps include:

1. Apply warm oil to the entire body, including the head. Start by massaging the scalp using circular motions.

2. Massage the entire face, including the forehead, cheeks, ears and jaws.

3. Massage the chest and abdomen by using circular strokes. Massage inward along the ribs.

4. Massage the back and buttocks. Continue massaging in straight, long strokes along the arms and legs and massage in circular motions over the joints and tender areas of the body.

5. Massage the entirety of the feet, including the soles and toes.

6. Relax for 5-10 minutes to allow the oil to moisturize the body.

7. Take a warm shower or bath and use a gentle cleanser to remove the oil from the body and hair.

What to Expect After Your Massage

After your abhyanga full-body oil massage, your skin should feel soft, supple, and fully moisturized. If your skin completely absorbs the oil, it can mean your skin is parched and needs moisturizing. You may also feel significantly better if you have been experiencing circulation issues or muscle stiffness.

The therapeutic ritual of oiling, massaging, washing and enjoying refreshments afterwards also provides a feeling of well-being and contentment that can energize you and make you ready to face the world again.
